Hewlett-Packard, better known as HP, is one of the largest multinational information technology corporations in the world. From a small rented garage in Palo Alto, California to one of the most reliable technology companies, HP has evolved greatly since its establishment in 1939 by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard. Bill and Dave met in 1934 at Stanford University, where they both graduated with degrees in electrical engineering. One of the first products of HP was an audio oscillator, which was widely used by American sound engineers. However, what set the course of Hewlett-Packard was the deal with Walt Disney Studios.

In 1959, HP went global and established a marketing organization in Switzerland and a manufacturing plant in Germany. During these years, HP was working on introducing new products in addition to its electronic test equipment. In the early 1970s, HP introduced the iconic HP-35, the first scientific hand-held calculator in the world. In 1988, the remarkable financial calculator HP-17B was introduced and became instantly popular. When it comes to computers and laptops, HP has been the world’s leading manufacturer multiple times. The company’s products are marketed from households to small and medium-size businesses, enterprises directly, via retailers, partners, major technology vendors and online distribution.

  • In 1939, Bill and Dave flipped a coin to decide whether their company should be named Hewlett-Packard or Packard Hewlett.
